Maru, in its many manifestations, was inspired by the artist’s appreciation for the small joys to be found in everyday life, as well as interviews with the band members of Gesu no Kiwami Otome who shared memories from their youth. Central Park noted that the form itself, which can be found in artistic traditions from mandalas to Islamic art and beyond, is a reassuring one due to its universality; whereas Maru’s style, uncomplicated and candid, is a call back to the idea of finding beauty and value in everyday objects.
